Lightweight Hunting Rifles - Did you buy a rifle you can actually shoot??
Hey everyone, Caylen here. This video is sure to ruffle some feathers, but the truth sometimes stings...
I was contemplating some trends I'm seeing within the modern rifle hunting community through the students we're seeing at our classes.
The trend is clearly indicating that the ultra-light hunting rifles are all the craze, but along with that they're being chambered in some really huge cartridges that don't necessarily lend themselves to be easy to shoot or forgiving.
I'm not trying to call anyone's baby ugly, but modern rifle hunters out there today need to take a hard look in the mirror and ask themselves if they can really shoot these ultra-light boomers, and actually hit what they ai...

    Recently retired,so I bought a new rifle and scope. Tikka T3X Lite stainless in 308. Plenty of ammo choices. Haven't been hunting since my teens. Hope I made a good choice.

      I think so Larry. The Tikka is a great platform, and the 308 is not only a classic, but generally the baseline cartridge people in the precision shooting world learn on.

    Everybody wants an ultralight rifle…….until they have to shoot one. They are extremely sensitive to input and seemingly magnify any instability, even movement from breathing. They’re often more sensitive (although not always) to ammo and temperature. When a customer comes to me for an ultralight rifle build, we have an honest discussion about the significant downsides from having rifle weight as the number one priority.

    This is a pretty clear illustration of why the 6mm are so dominating in competitive spaces where recoil matters (self spotting/PRS) a lot. A 6BRA shoots comfortably inside much larger, harder-recoil cartridges. The one criticism I’d levy is that it seems you are putting thumbs on the scale lumpting together things like a 110 A tip with a 175 SMK or 140 ELD M. In a bolt 223 you can run 90 A tips. A 90 A tip from a 223 bolt can hit 2750 fps. At 500y, this gives a drop/drift of 49.9”/17.4”. At 800y, it’s 174.4”/49.77”. And at 1000y, it’s 320”/84”. Just moving to this bullet would move the .223 from far underperforming to shooting inside the 6.5 CM. Give the 90 A tip a bit more gas in a larger case (22 BR, 22 CM, 22ARC) and magic can happen. At 3000fps, the 90 A tip has 1000y windage about the same as your 300 win mag with 230s. In the right cartridge, it can do this with about 35gr of powder. That’s pretty amazing efficiency in terms of external ballistics vs recoil.

      @MODERNDAYSNIPER 5 дней назад

      Appreciate the detailed response and synopsis! You’re absolutely right man, I was building that chart off of some of the most common cartridges and bullet combinations that people use. The A-Tip is a phenom; I shoot the 110’s from my BRA at 2730 and they’re absolutely lights out. Thanks again!

    I use repurposed big glass photo equipment. Solid tripod and ballhead, plus a wimberley wh-200 gimbal if I know I'm gonna be stationary a while. Level the tripod and that gimbal head guarantees I stay level at any aim angle or direction. But it's slow to set up so not so great for shoot and scoot type stuff. Most important tip I can offer is WEIGHTS. Many if not most tripods will have some sort of system designed to hook weights. If you're stationary, weight your tripod with whatever you can. Get it good and heavy and it'll wiggle around a lot less.

    That looks fantastic! I thought you were joking when you were talking about painting your action bolt and barrel. But it came out fine I guess. I feel like the paint would rub off the bolt and inside the action and get down in your trigger and such.

    • @MODERNDAYSNIPER
      @MODERNDAYSNIPER 6 дней назад

      Thank you! The paint does rub off, but it doesn't flake. If you had a bead blaster you could mask n blast your barreled action to have better paint hook-up. Not had issues with paint getting into triggers.

      For sure man, glad you got something out of it! The 6.5 PRC is really hard to beat man, I'd have gone that route over the 7 SAUM, but I was shooting the SAUM before the 6.5 PRC came out. I'm going to shoot out the last of my 7 SAUM barrels and go with the 6.5 PRC for the hunting rifle and keep the 7 PRC as an extended long range comp rifle with an all-steel barrel.

    I didn't even finish the video and using the stats he gave us 675 yds. 5mph wind I estimated 2 clicks Went back and finished the video and he was 2.1 clicks What I was hoping for in this video was how to read the trees & brush for wind speed

    • @MODERNDAYSNIPER
      @MODERNDAYSNIPER 25 дней назад

      Our home range has no trees. Vegetation doesn't tell you much out west; sage brush appears to move the same in 30 mile per hour winds as it does in 5 mile per hour winds. Your first comment on clicks is confusing as well - we don't speak in clicks for adjustments.

    • @DLN-ix6vf
      @DLN-ix6vf 24 дня назад

      @@MODERNDAYSNIPER clicks on the turrets no matter MOA or Mil. I just went to a long distance course for one day at a cost of over $500.00 and the whole course outside in the sun entailed Kestrel Ballistic Calculators and shooting 35 rds. @ 200 to 500 yds. Tip: take the first number in the distance multiply by mph. wind using a cheap $35.00 Kestrel and divide by 12. So at 500 yds with 6 mph winds you move turrets 2 clicks and lead into the wind to left of target and you good.

    Where are you getting the Hornady 4DOF app from? I've got the version downloaded from Google Play and the bullet library is very limited (at least in .308). I shoot a Hornady factory load (for several years) and the bullet isn't even in the app. Am I missing something?

    • @TheParkingLotGarage
      @TheParkingLotGarage 28 дней назад

      My first thought is it could be the type of bullet you’re shooting. Seems like the bullet profiles in 4DOF are generally the higher BC, match-type bullets. So bullets like the SST, interlock, some CX’s, etc will typically only show up in their regular BC calculator and not in 4DOF.

    • @MODERNDAYSNIPER
      @MODERNDAYSNIPER 27 дней назад

      There's two sides to the application; a 4 DOF side which uses radar-derived drag curves, and then the "BC Solver side which uses ballistic coefficients to predict your bullet's trajectory. The comment below is correct; most of the bullets in the 4 DOF side arew specifically used in long range shooting because the deeper time of flight requires more accurate data to predict where the bullet will be in time and space, hence the radar drag curves. On the other side using BC's, those solutions won't be as accurate at the deeper ranges, however it's not of much consequence becasue 99% of the people using those types of bullets won't be shooting them that deep in range anyway.

    2nd year of PRS.....we have invested into all the proper gear finally....but we dont have Kestrels yet. (Wife and I) We run MPA production rifles, Bushnell XRS3s, and CKYEPODs. I just don't believe the hype with a Kestrel. It only tells me what is happening at my location and the wind is probably dirty AF at my location. And before someone comments "yeah, you probably dont place in the top!" We both shoot 75% cof on average, and I am knocking on that top 10 on the regular. More than anything? I love the look on people's faces at the end of the match when they ask what my Kestrel data was for the day. HA!
